The things we do.

I'm so sorry for the recent silence!  Things here have been pretty overwhelming, but are looking brighter.  My sweet little cat Harold became really sick- when you picked him up he felt like a floppy noodle and he was sleeping all the time.  He underwent a series of tests (it felt like all of the tests under the sun) that concluded that he is at the beginning stages of kidney failure.  It sounds terrible, but with proper treatment he could live another two years with a good quality of life.   Thank god.

He's now on blood pressure medication and we have to give him an IV of fluids every day.  That's right, I'm giving my cat an IV.  Every.  Day.  Let it be known that I am a really squeamish person.  Every time the needle goes in or out of him, I shudder.  Yuck.  Every day it's getting easier, and I can see a difference in his coat and his general temperament since the treatment started.   I was so worried that I was going to lose him!  It just feels really good to know that he's not going anywhere for a while.

  4. Bless your heart, you're stronger than I was. My Keekee died a few years ago of advanced kidney failure. Good thing you caught it early. If you were late like us, Harold would have a different future.

He's lucky to have you guys. Hope he bounces back with the treatment!

  5. Aw that's so sad. I'm glad he's doing better now though. I would be devastated if I had to give one of my pets an IV. He's such a cute cat.

  7. It's so hard watching them grow older and start getting sick. I hope he keeps responding well and you'll get lots more quality time with this lucky guy.

  10. What a sweet kitty. I am constantly amazed at how we expand ourselves, our comfort zones, and our world when those we love are in need. You are lovely.

  12. My pup is getting sick and is on heavy duty meds for his liver and heart now. He's better for them but it does make you want to cuddle them more doesn't it?

  13. So sorry about Harold - he's a beautiful kitty! My dear departed Lester had a brief bout with kidney failure when he was 9 (he died at four days shy of 16 of an unrelated problem). We did the SubQ fluids for a couple weeks, then rechecked him and everything was normal - we never had to do it again! That said, I found the easiest way to "do the deed" was to put a towel on the kitchen counter and have my husband stand in front of him with a spoonful of yogurt to lap up. He didn't care a bit about what was going on behind him as long as he was eating yogurt :-)
